INGREDIENTS (for 4 pieces)

    • 2 ½ cups of flour (380g)
    • 1/2 spoon of sugar
    • 1 teaspoon of salt
    • 15 g of yeast (or 7g dry yeast)
    • 3/4 cup of warm water (160ml)
    • 25 g of butter
    • poppy seeds/sesame seeds/salt (for toppings)

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Stir yeast with 50ml of warm water and sugar, allow yeast to dissolve.
  2. Add flour and salt to a mixing bowl.
  3. Melt butter and allow to cool.
  4. Add yeast mixture, water and butter to flour, mix until well combined. If too thick add some lukewarm water. Cover the bowl and let rise until doubled in size (approx. 1 hour depending on the room temperature)
  5. Preheat oven to 180° C. Divide dough into 4 portions, and each portion in half. Roll 2 long ropes (called sulka), each about 30 cm long. Connect them on one end and intertwine like a braid. Shape into a circle. Repeat to have 4 obwarzanki.
  6. Boil water in a pot. Place first obwarzanek into the water for 10 seconds, lift it out and place on an oven grate, repeat with remaining ones.
  7. When still wet, top with sesame seeds, poppy seeds, or salt
  8. Bake for about 20-30 minutes until your obwarzanki are nicely brown.
